The Sowdon Singers with Croydon Band

On Saturday 15th September Sean Peters arranged a memorial concert to celebrate the life of his Grandad Ralph Sowdon at St Mark’s Church, Purley. The concert featured a choir (that I think was brought together especially for this concert) called The Sowdon Singers and the Croydon Citadel Band.

There was a story behind Sean’s reasons for inviting the band to participate. Sean’s Grandad and Grandma had many years ago rented their first house together. The landlord instructed them that they needed to buy the property or move out. The Salvation Army stepped in to lend them money for the deposit for the property. Sean’s Grandad remembered this generosity and asked that donations were made to the Salvation Army from the collection at his funeral. When the Army learnt the story about the donations they decided to set up the ‘Ralph Sowdon Memorial Fund’ which would be used to help those struggling to raise money for a deposit on a property. This was the reason that Sean invited the Salvation Army to participate in this concert and all the profit from the evening was donated to the memorial fund.

The church was full for the concert and the choir sang a number of well known pieces some with the band and others with piano. There were soloists and the congregation joined the choir in singing three hymns. The band also played three pieces Let Everything Praise, Endless Praise and Amazing Grace.
